Second Language Acquisition (SLA)

Posted by admin

This is described as the language an individual learns after they have learnt their native language or in addition to the native language. An example would be an native English speaker learning Spanish as a second or additional language, or vice versa.

The order of acquisition is an attempt to conform the technique of learning the second language in the same as in the first language. This in our example would be to teach the individual concerned to acquire the second language in the same order as they learnt their native language, this is extremely difficult as the individual learnt their native language when they were very young. In the case of the second language order of acquisition, when learning Spanish, the individual is now considerably older and much more aware of the learning environment – which can act as a disadvantage in the learning process.

Sequence of acquisition refers to the manner in which the individual progresses with the use of pronouns in the second language. Researchers found that the learners progressed from complete omission to inclusion of pronouns based on their logical deductions towards the second language with almost no indication of first or native language affecting the decision of the pronoun use.

The Interlanguage concept applies to an individual learning a second language, but applies their first language components to the new language being learnt, this results in a new language being developed, an example of which is Esperanto.

Other important research conducted into the second language acquisition processes were identified as internal and external factors affecting the learner. The internal factors are primarily concerned with the learners attaining the competence of in the second language. The external factors affecting the student; these include social effects, interaction, input, and pedagogical effects.

A brief overview and examples of the external affects on the SLA student begins with the social effects – generally concerned with attitudes of the student’s peers and immediate society and their view on the second language being studied. The interaction effect claims significant advance in vocabulary and assists the learner to obtain a deeper meaning of the language. Input effects include direct contact with the second language and utilizing in a manner that they may learn more. Pedagogical effects refers to the physical teaching of the second language, with research indicating that traditional language teaching is not as efficient or effective as it was thought to be.

Relating to our example; the second language Spanish student would be internally affected by his competence or ability, and ultimately confidence; whilst being externally affected by what his peers or society perceives of his learning Spanish, as well as the amount of interaction with Spanish speaking individuals, the method of learning and the teaching techniques he is exposed to.

When one decides to learn a second language, as in our example of learning Spanish, one does not have to feel inhibited by the technicalities as pointed out, cognizance would be recommended, but focus on the internal factors affecting one in levels of competence and ultimately one’s confidence.

Another Year Draws to an End.

Posted by admin

As autumn sets in and the days start getting shorter, we are faced with the issue of another year has passed, and we haven’t really done anything. What happened to the committed desire of self improvement, giving up a bad habit or traveling to a different country? Unfortunately we tend to get caught up in the day to day activities that divert our attention elsewhere. Never say never, why not take that overseas trip you wanted or learn a new language, why not even combine the two?

With the availability of resources your options and the opportunities are limitless. Learn a new language and book your ticket to that location, a dual motivator if you will. You might want to learn Spanish and travel to Spain, you can learn by ordering Spanish cds or enroll in an online program.

When traveling to Spain your newly learnt language will be an asset to you, imagine walking into the bar and ordering a beer (Cerveza por favor - just in case your were wondering) and being able to know and enjoy the fact that your choice was not only correct, but communicated correctly too. Picture trying to explain to someone that you are literally dying to have a beer in the sweltering heat and there is no coherent middle ground that either of you can actually communicate on, let alone understand each other.

That is just one example, because if you learn Spanish by enrolling in an online Spanish course or perhaps by learning Spanish software or whichever, ultimately you will be embarking upon a journey of discovery and self help. Inevitably all programs, courses or cds begin with the basics, which enable you to learn the initial aspects to assist you in communicating whilst in the country. Not only are you limited to that, perhaps you have some neighbors in the region and you can use your newly acquired skill to converse with them.

One doesn’t have to allow each and every year to pass without accomplishing some of your goals that you set out for yourself. Yes at times you do run short of resources and time, but you literally have to force yourself into getting started. Once you are up and running you will gather the momentum and actually continue, as they say once the bug bites! Utilize the time constructively, instead of staring at a television screen to improve your linguistic talents and abilities by applying to learn Spanish, or purchasing Spanish cds, it will give you the motivation to get up and go on that holiday to Spain. You are not only limited to Spain, considering the whole of South and Central America, with the exception of Brazil, are native Spanish speaking people. The medium you choose of learning Spanish, would be a choice only you can make, but most importantly make the decision and carry through with it. You will enjoy the benefits of having the edge over the person who didn’t enroll on that online Spanish class.

Learning Spanish – a Personal Account

Having the opportunity of working in a foreign country or with foreign language speaking people is quite an honor. One is exposed to their culture, their way of thinking as well as their language. Far too often do we believe that only language truly worth speaking is English, agreed it is an international language, but believe it or not it is not the most widely spoken – Chinese is.

If one looks at the second most spoken language by native terms, meaning the amount of people who are native speakers of that specific language, then Spanish comes in at second position and English follows in third position.

I had the opportunity of working on the cruise ships for a period of about five years, five unforgettable years as I had met people of all walks of life and all different cultures. In fact, there were apparently over 42 different nationalities contained in the crew of one specific ship, where I completed one of my contracts.

I was fortunate in the fact that I was exposed to the everyday languages of the people that I worked with. One of the languages that I picked up, not completely fluently, was Spanish. By virtue of the fact that a lot of my colleagues within the wine cellar were from South America, I took the opportunity of learning Spanish, and I actually learnt quite quickly. I found it amazing to be able to talk, somewhat incoherently, to my colleagues and then when we had a group of wealthy Mexican guests, I was lucky enough to have these guests placed in my station, where I served them wine and drinks every night for the two week cruise. I practiced my Spanish I had learnt with the guests, and it was almost an unspoken respect that I had gained from these individuals. It really paid off at the end of that cruise, as although I earned most of my income on a commission basis, a lot of this income came from the guests’ tips too. It was definitely a memorable time; I had even been invited to visit with these guests, if I ever went to Mexico. How different things would have been if I had not learnt Spanish. I am sure the guests would have enjoyed their vacation, but the richness of making new friends enhances anybody’s experience of any situation.

Although I didn’t completely finish learning Spanish through my friends and colleagues, I was motivated enough to purchase Spanish cds that I took home with me to continue my studies. It was a lot easier though when you have someone you can talk to, in the Spanish language you are trying to learn – it helps with the tenses and the pronunciation of the language. The language has eluded me slightly due to not continuing my studies, but does resurface every so often when I do encounter a Spanish speaking individual. It is well worth the effort to learn Spanish, it is widely spoken and utterly enjoyable as you progress to the next level of linguistic mastery.

How do I learn spanish fast?

Posted by admin

My family always talks in spanish, not my dad and his family but my mom and her family. they always talk about things such as about people and about me and its really starting to get annoying, does anyone know how to or where to learn or download spanish, It needs to be free and it doesent matter if its quick but atleast a little easy… its a easy 10 points!

PLEASE!!!

Well, if you're really interesting in learning Spanish, you could probably look up a few good free online courses on the web. There are many out there.

Another good way would be to pick up an English-Spanish dictionary. They may be slow, but after a while, you'll get the hang of the language.

Probably the best way to learn the language, however, is to emerse yourself in it more. For example, I'm learning Japanese, and I've found that watching shows and listening to music in Japanese has taught me a lot more than any book or online course has. Maybe find a Spanish musical artist to listen to, or find someone to talk to that speaks native Spanish and very little English. This is a good way to try and force yourself to remember and put together whatever you might already know.

How can i learn spanish fast to impress the guy i hve crush on?

hi, plz i want a way to learn spanish. i know some but i need to talk good.
the guy i like will be impressed if i talked to him in spanish and i will get his attention :) it is his 1st language, but he wonot teach me. he is not really that kind of guy, he is "mean" but what can i do! i will try ur advices guys, thx soo much

Practice with your friends, browse Spanish-language web sites, read/reread/read again/and again/and again Spanish vocabulary lists, ask a Spanish teacher for special assistance, listen to modern Spanish-language music (it’s so helpful! And now I know some slang. :) ), et cetera.

But…

There are waaay easier ways to impress a guy. Is there some reason for learning Spanish in particular? Is it his first language or something? If it is in no way special, just some way you want to impress him that has no meaning to him, don’t expect him to notice you.

Language Pronunciation – Make or Break

Posted by admin

The importance of pronunciation in certain languages can either make or break the individual that is talking in that specific language. Clearly this is not a reference to a native speaker, but rather to someone who is learning a new language. Quite often people tend to take shortcuts, and these can have disastrous effects on the spoken language that the individual concerned is attempting to master.

Take for instance when you want to learn Spanish, you can pick up a book at the local bookstore and start learning. You carry on with this method of self tutoring and are relatively impressed with you progress. In fact, you complete the ‘How to Learn Spanish’ book in a couple of weeks and proclaim yourself an expert. This is where the funny part comes in, because you go to a party and after a couple of drinks you start acting like the expert you believe you are. The words start spouting out like a fountain of knowledge; you don’t tell anyone you learnt Spanish by yourself. You actually sound like quite a pro, everyone is enjoying you demonstration of your newly learnt skill.  After what appears to have been a great evening the dark brunette comes up to you and secretly whispers in your ear, that some of the words you used were in fact completely mispronounced and a couple had differently meanings than what you had intended them for. By this time you have gone a shade of red that hasn’t been classified yet, you want to run and hide, thank goodness no-one else knew.

That scenario may be enough to scare anyone from learning a new language, but it shouldn’t it just displays the possibility of something like that happening when one doesn’t approach a language the correct way.

When learning Spanish, there are differences in pronunciation than what we read into it, a couple of examples are: the ‘ll’ which is not pronounced as it appears, sometimes the ‘j’ is a y or a g as according to an English speaking person. It is therefore imperative that if you intend learning Spanish and perhaps you want to learn Spanish quickly, you focus on the pronunciation via a phonetically illustrated medium or an option that is going to assist you in this area of the language.

There are obviously numerous options available when you have made the decision to continue your education or to learn a new language, there are websites that offer you Spanish cds, some offer online Spanish courses or learning Spanish software, one will also come across the odd advertisement for a one on one tutor. It all comes down to what you prefer and can actually afford. Just don’t lose sight of what you intend learning, do it correctly, it can prove to be more difficult to undo something than do it right the first time around. Once you learn to speak Spanish, you won’t look back it will definitely serve you in many ways.

I need to know how to learn Spanish fast?

Posted by admin

because my company is sending me to South America for three months. Also, I want to make sure the Spanish I learn is the Spanish they speak in Latin America. I think it is different from in Spain. What is the best way to learn how to speak Spanish for my situation?

Hi Annabelle,

Congratulations! I hope you enjoy your posting to South America.

Yes, Latin American Spanish is different from the Spanish in Spain, both in the pronunciation and even some of the grammar and word usage. If you use Spanish Spanish phrases in South America, some people won't understand you. The best way to learn Spanish fast is with an online course, and the best one I've found for Latin American Spanish is called "Learning Spanish Like Crazy". The teacher is very cool and she knows how to make it interesting and fun. She is from South America, so emulating her accent will help your Spanish sound authentic.

How fast you learn will depend on how committed you are, but I think when you see how easy and fun it is you'll be encouraged to do more because it won't seem like work at all. Check it out. Buena suerte (good luck!)

Bob
